Almond-Milk

In the last few years, dairy has met its match. Last week, I went to a tiny café in a rural Somerset village for a latte. Well, low and behold, they had not one, but three milk alternatives on offer.

This is a big win for dairy-free and vegan diets alike but what about everyone else? It’s estimated that one in three Britons drink plant-based milk with demand on a consistent up. So, for anyone who wants to join the growing cult of oat and soya enthusiasts, here is a breakdown of 4 milk alternatives…

Up First, Oat…

Crowned Britain’s most popular milk alternative, oat milk is rich in flavour and super creamy. The oat empire is growing fast as brands like Oatly have branched out into oat yoghurt and cream. So, what are the details?

Pros:

  • Free from soy and nuts
  • Great source of vitamin B12
  • Great source of vitamin D
  • Low to zero saturated fats
  • You can make it yourself at home, check out this recipe
  • It has a lower impact on the environment than dairy milk

Cons

  • It’s not gluten-free
  • Certain brands sweeten the milk so it can be high in added sugar
  • It’s not expensive however, it’s not cheap in comparison with cow’s milk

Milk Alternative Number Two, Almond Milk…

Almond milk is perfect if you enjoy slightly sweet nutty flavours. It’s also great if you’re looking to cut down your calorie intake but can’t handle a black coffee!

Pros

Cons

  • Although almonds are a good source of protein, almond milk is not
  • Environmental concern about the water needed to cultivate almonds

Last but Not Least, Soya Milk…

Soy products were bobbing about long before oat milk came to join the party and with good reason. Made from soybeans and filtered water, it’s tasty and smooth.
